2013 ICAR (Sydney): The transition from TAIR to the Arabidopsis Information Portal (AIP)

This workshop will present the IAIC’s efforts to enable a stable data and resources access point for Arabidopsis bioinformatics to serve the global plant research community. An additional aim is to engage meeting participants in a discussion that will (1) allow input into the development of this new informatics resource (the Arabidopsis Information Portal, AIP) and (2) provide concrete examples of how the community can contribute to and benefit from it.

IAIC Publication in The Plant Cell- Building a New Arabidopsis Information Portal

The IAIC published in June (via Open Access) the outcomes of the recent Design Workshop in The Plant Cell (link to article here.) This publication describes the challenges of developing an Arabidopsis Information Portal (AIP) to replace the bioinformatics resource, TAIR, that currently houses much of the community’s genomic (and other) public data.

Inaugural Scientific Advisory Board Appointed

The IAIC Scientific Advisory Board was recently appointed and includes: Gloria Coruzzi (New York University, USA), Kazuki Saito (RIKEN Plant Science Center, Chiba University, Japan), Magnus Nordborg (Gregor Mendel Institute of Plant Molecular Biology, Austria), Mark Estelle (University of California, San Diego, USA), Mark Forster (Syngenta, UK), Paul Kersey (European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), UK), and Xuemei Chen (University of California, Riverside, USA). The first SAB meeting takes place at the Vienna Arabidopsis Conference in July, 2012.

Working Groups present at the Design Workshop

Working Groups Chairs (EAI, Modules/Use Cases, Standards/Ontologies) presented summaries of their group discussions to participants of the December Design Workshop and engaged in discussions about building the new Arabidopsis Information Portal (AIP). Chairs are taking lead roles in developing a workshop white paper which will contain recommendations to the community for developing funding proposals to build the AIP.

Design Workshop Concludes

The Design Workshop (Dec. 11-14, 2011, Atlanta, Georgia) concluded after 2.5 intense days of interactive team sessions that collectively envisioned creative approaches (and associated challenges) to developing an Arabidopsis Information Portal (AIP). After taking a break for the holidays participants will put forward several concept maps for the AIP and put forward community recommendations in a white paper. The Steering Committee will present outcomes from the Design Workshop and next steps at the IAIC public workshop in San Diego on Jan. 16, 2012.
